My Sister. Myself: International Lesbian Day Reflections (Part 1)
It is International Lesbian Day (October 8), my readers—I dare not miss posting on this day when lesbians all over the world, both closeted and ‘out’, are grappling with and celebrating their identity in a society that is largely hostile toward them. As a black femme lesbian—a black ‘mid-sized’ femme lesbian (size 12 if you must know), I find myself at the intersection of body dysphoria, internalized homophobia, rejections by the black and African/American community, as well as everything that comes with being a woman.
I want to write candidly about all of this—and unfortunately, today I am experiencing burn out, and I am finding myself struggling to organize my thoughts. As such, I plan to write my reflections in parts…and perhaps insert some creative works into my posts that coincide. Nonetheless, I wanted to at least acknowledge what today is and what it means my readers who are women loving women (WLW), like myself.
To my small but mighty group of subscribers—cheers for today.
