So at 6:47am on New Year’s Eve, I woke up with the worst pain I’ve felt in my life in my upper abdomen (no—I hadn’t been partying or drinking any alcohol). I couldn’t walk well, and I could hardly breathe. I threw up pink froth and was disoriented. My family helped me get to the ER, where I was admitted. I stayed at the hospital through the New Years weekend and Monday. From then until now, I have lost 8 pounds (at least I’m off to a good start for the year in that regard) and had more than 30 vials of blood drawn for tests and retests—three ultrasounds (I’m still waiting for some of the results). It’s a bit funny, but after a bit—during one of the blood draws—the blood basically slowed to a couple of meager drops. After monitoring the pattern of my liver enzymes (which were significantly high), I was allowed to go home (albeit my enzymes were still very high, but less than the initial) given downward trend. Cholestisis, side effect of my medications, autoimmune disease—no one is certain at this point of what caused the acute incident. But at least infection has been ruled out so far!
