“Yes, I’m Having Coffee with Her […]”
Holland Taylor and Sarah Paulson. Cher and Alex. The world is so ageist, that when someone is of legal marriage age (across all states—so I mean 21+ years of age. And yes I mean to say 21+) and they chose someone older, there is a grumble. I don’t know about everyone else, but couples like Holland and Paulson are quite affirming for me (Cher is not gay—although I truly am happy to see that she found love!), as I am a woman who is attracted to mature women. I have great conversations with them, I love how they are pretty much how they will be for the rest of their lives (no surprises and we both have no one to impress) and of course, I cannot help my attraction.
I think that we are (finally) beginning to lean toward a world where we value humanity, and we allow ourselves to be happy at the cost of no one else’s happiness or without causing pain. I know when I’ve felt the happiest—so damn happy. Now, I’ve not met my one and only. And maybe I’ve seen them. But I will not pass off my happiness to make others feel comfortable; that’s why I’m openly gay, and proudly a woman who is attracted to mature women. And when I do have my chance at love and meet her, I will owe no one any explanations. You/they might one day say, “You’re having coffee with her?” And I will say, “Yes, I am having coffee with her—by hell I am and isn’t she damn beautiful?” If you haven’t noticed, most of my prose and poetry gives some indication that I am attracted to mature women.
